What month is best for fishing in Puerto Aventuras?

The best month for fishing charters in Puerto Aventuras depends largely on what you are hoping to catch, as the region offers a diverse range of species throughout the year. While the deep-sea fishing high season for the most prized game fish is generally considered to be from March to August, the waters remain productive with various species all year long. This consistent activity is due to Puerto Aventuras’ prime location along a dramatic drop-off just a short distance from the coast, giving quick access to prime fishing grounds.

For anglers seeking large, iconic pelagic species, the spring and summer months are ideal. From March through July, you can expect to find sailfish, marlin (blue and white), and mahi-mahi (dorado) in their peak numbers. These months are known for exciting offshore action and are when many of the big tournaments are held. This is the time to go if you want the classic deep-sea fishing experience with powerful, acrobatic fish.

However, the fishing doesn’t stop after July. The fall and winter months, from October to February, are an absolute hotspot for jigging and bottom fishing. During this time, species like amberjack, snappers, and grouper are plentiful. Additionally, wahoo are present year-round but often have their own peak seasons in the fall and winter. Ultimately, the best month to fish in Puerto Aventuras is a matter of personal preference, as there is always a species available to provide a challenging and rewarding day on the water.

Is there good fishing in the Riviera Maya?

Yes, the Riviera Maya offers excellent fishing opportunities. Thanks to its unique geography and the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, the region is considered a premier destination for anglers of all skill levels. The second-largest barrier reef in the world runs parallel to the coast, creating a diverse and abundant ecosystem that supports a wide variety of fish. Whether you prefer deep-sea, inshore, or fly fishing, the Riviera Maya has something to offer year-round.

The area is particularly famous for its deep-sea fishing, where you can target large pelagic species. Just a short boat ride from the shore, the ocean floor drops off dramatically, giving you quick access to the deep-water habitat of prized game fish. The list of trophy species is impressive, including blue and white marlin, sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, and wahoo. These fish are known for their strength and spectacular fights, making them an exciting challenge for any angler.

While the pelagic season runs from roughly March to August, there is no “off-season” for fishing in the Riviera Maya. The warm climate and calm waters provide year-round opportunities to catch a variety of species. Throughout the year, you can find snapper, grouper, barracuda, and kingfish. For those who enjoy fly fishing, the flats and lagoons of areas like the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve are a paradise for targeting bonefish, permit, and tarpon.

For more information please take a look at our guide to fish & seasonality.

How much does it cost to go fishing in Playa del Carmen?

The cost of our Playa del Carmen fishing charters varies according to the amount of time you want to be out at sea. The following options are available:

  • 4 hours – $675.00 USD
  • 6 hours – $875.00 USD
  • 8 hours – $1,075.00 USD

What is bottom fishing and how does it work?

Bottom fishing, also called legering, is a fishing technique where the bait or lure is presented at the bottom of a body of water. This method targets fish that feed near the bottom, like catfish, grouper, and snapper.

It typically involves using a weighted rig with bait to attract fish. The rig may be cast and retrieved or left stationary on the bottom.

What is troll fishing and how does it work?

Trolling is a method where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This can be done behind a moving boat, or by slowly winding the line in when fishing from a static position.

How it works:

  • Setup: Fishing lines are equipped with lures or bait fish, and often additional weights or diving planes to control the depth.
  • Movement: The lines are dragged through the water either by a moving boat or by manually winding the line.
  • Attraction: The movement and appearance of the lure or bait mimic the movement of prey fish, attracting predatory fish.
  • Hooking: When a fish strikes the lure or bait, the hook sets, and the angler reels in the catch.
What do I need to know when traveling to Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen, or “Playa” as it’s affectionately known, is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico. It stands as a vibrant contrast to the more rustic feel of Tulum and the exclusive nature of Puerto Aventuras. What was once a small fishing village has grown into a bustling hub of tourism, art, and culture. The city’s charm lies in its perfect blend of a sophisticated, international atmosphere and a relaxed, beach-town vibe. With its world-class dining, eclectic shopping, and energetic nightlife, Playa del Carmen serves as a lively and convenient base for exploring the best of the Riviera Maya.

The history of Playa del Carmen is deeply rooted in the ancient Mayan civilization. Originally named Xaman-Ha, or “northern water” in Mayan, the settlement was a vital starting point for pilgrimages to the sacred island of Cozumel. It was also an important trading post along ancient Mayan sea routes. After the arrival of the Spanish, the town’s name was changed to honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries, it remained a quiet village, but its proximity to Cozumel’s thriving scuba diving scene in the 1960s began to draw attention. The town experienced massive growth in the 1980s and 90s, transforming into the vibrant city it is today while still retaining its unique, low-rise charm.

The city’s main attraction is Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, a bustling, pedestrian-only street that runs parallel to the beach. This lively thoroughfare is the heart of Playa, lined with a dizzying array of shops, restaurants, bars, and galleries. Beyond the avenue, the city offers other unique attractions. The beaches themselves, such as Playa Mamitas and Playa Fundadores, are a major draw for sunbathing and water sports. The ruins of Xaman-Ha, a small but significant Mayan site, are a short walk from downtown and offer a quick glimpse into the area’s ancient past. Playa del Carmen is also the main ferry port for day trips to the island of Cozumel.

The weather in Playa del Carmen is tropical and warm year-round. The dry season, from November to April, is the most popular time to visit, with ideal temperatures between 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) and clear skies. The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and more frequent, but often short-lived, rain showers. Temperatures can reach up to 90°F (32°C) during this period. It’s important to be aware that the Atlantic hurricane season is from June to November, and while a major storm is unlikely, it’s always wise to monitor local weather reports.

To have a great trip, there are a few important concepts to keep in mind. Playa del Carmen is very walkable, and exploring the city on foot or by bike is highly recommended. While the main tourist areas are generally safe, it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. It’s also important to note that the taxi union has a strong presence, and ride-hailing apps like Uber are not available. Finally, be sure to venture beyond Quinta Avenida to find more authentic, local restaurants where you can enjoy traditional food at a better price. With its diverse offerings and central location, Playa del Carmen is an ideal destination for a memorable and exciting vacation.

The distance from Playa del Carmen to our Pescado Adventures boats in the Puerto Aventuras marina is 15 miles (24 kilometers), approximately 30 minutes one way on the Federal Highway that runs between the two destinations.

What do I need to know when traveling to Paamul?

Paamul is a hidden coastal gem, offering a tranquil and unique travel experience on the Riviera Maya. Unlike the bustling energy of Playa del Carmen or the bohemian vibe of Tulum, Paamul is a small, quiet community known for its serene beach, private atmosphere, and dedicated focus on marine life. This destination is perfect for travelers who want to escape the crowds, immerse themselves in nature, and enjoy a peaceful vacation centered around the sea. The community itself has grown from a simple RV park to include hotels, restaurants, and a well-maintained beachfront, all while retaining its secluded charm.

The history of Paamul is tied to both ancient Mayan culture and more recent developments. Its name, “Paamul,” translates from Mayan to “a hill destroyed,” hinting at its past as an ancient Mayan settlement. In the more recent past, over 40 years ago, it began as a coconut plantation, which later evolved into a recreational vehicle park for “snowbirds” and a private community. Today, this unique history has created a diverse and multigenerational community that values a quiet, nature-focused lifestyle. The presence of these long-term residents and a relaxed pace of life are central to the atmosphere of Paamul.

Paamul’s main attraction is its beautiful, crescent-shaped bay and the coral reef that lies just offshore. The beach itself is a mix of white sand and exposed limestone, and the protected cove creates calm, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and swimming. The reef is a haven for marine life, where snorkelers can easily spot colorful fish, manta rays, and even sea turtles. Paamul is also a popular spot for scuba divers, with a dive center on-site that offers a less crowded experience than other locations on the coast. For nature lovers, the beach is a nesting ground for sea turtles, who come ashore at night in July and August to lay their eggs.

The weather in Paamul is typical of the Riviera Maya, with a warm, tropical climate year-round. The dry season, from November to April, is the most comfortable time to visit, with average temperatures between 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) and lower humidity. The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and more frequent, though often brief, rain showers. The temperature during this time can reach up to 90°F (32°C). Visitors traveling during the wet season, which is also the Atlantic hurricane season, should monitor weather forecasts to be prepared.

For a great trip, there are a few important things to know. Paamul is a small community, so it’s a good idea to have a rental car or plan for taxis if you want to explore the surrounding towns of Playa del Carmen or Tulum. It’s a “sandy beach with some exposed limestone,” so water shoes are recommended for comfort and safety. As with other eco-conscious areas in the region, remember to use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the reef and marine life. Paamul is a place for unwinding and connecting with nature, making it the perfect destination for a truly relaxing and authentic escape.

The distance from Paamul to our Pescado Adventures boats in the Puerto Aventuras marina is 4 miles (6 kilometers), approximately 10 minutes one way on the Federal Highway that runs between the two destinations.

What do I need to know when traveling to Puerto Aventuras?

Puerto Aventuras, a vibrant and meticulously planned coastal community, offers a distinctive travel experience on the Riviera Maya. Unlike its more bohemian neighbors, Tulum and Akumal, Puerto Aventuras is defined by its sophisticated marina, tranquil atmosphere, and exclusive, upscale ambiance. This gated community is a hub for nautical tourism, attracting those who enjoy sailing, sport fishing, and a more private, leisurely pace. The town’s design is centered around its beautiful marina, where a variety of restaurants, shops, and services line the waterfront, creating a serene and picturesque backdrop for a relaxing vacation.

The history of Puerto Aventuras is rooted in a modern vision for a coastal paradise. It was originally conceived in the late 1980s by a group of entrepreneurs who sought to create a self-contained, harmonious town. They envisioned a place where private homes, hotels, and recreational facilities would coexist around a central marina. This vision led to the development of a unique community that has matured into a sought-after destination for expatriates, families, and retirees.

Puerto Aventuras’ unique attractions are predominantly tied to the water and its upscale amenities. The marina itself is a major draw, serving as the only one of its kind on the Riviera Maya. It’s the perfect place to charter a yacht, book a deep-sea fishing trip, or simply enjoy a meal while watching the boats. The community is also home to a challenging 9-hole golf course, a variety of tennis courts, and several dolphin and manatee habitats where visitors can enjoy interactive experiences. Just outside the main gate, the area offers easy access to some of the region’s most famous natural attractions, including the pristine cenotes of the Riviera Maya.

The weather in Puerto Aventuras, like the rest of the Riviera Maya, is tropical with a warm and sunny climate year-round. The dry season from December to April is the most popular time to visit, with average daytime temperatures around 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) and low humidity. The wet season, from May to October, is warmer with temperatures reaching up to 90°F (32°C), accompanied by more frequent but usually short-lived rain showers. The hurricane season officially runs from June to November, and while major storms are infrequent, it’s wise to monitor weather reports if you plan to travel during this time.

When planning a trip to Puerto Aventuras, a few important concepts are worth knowing. The community is entirely self-contained and gated, offering a high level of security and privacy, which also means that you may need a taxi or rental car to explore beyond its borders. The two main beaches, Fatima Bay and Chan Yu Yum, are excellent for swimming and snorkeling. While most restaurants and shops accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to have Mexican pesos on hand for tipping and small purchases. The atmosphere is generally relaxed but with a touch of formality, so a mix of casual resort wear and slightly more refined attire for evening dining is appropriate. With its blend of luxury, adventure, and tranquility, Puerto Aventuras is a premier destination for a sophisticated and serene escape.

What do I need to know when traveling to Akumal?

Akumal, a tranquil coastal community nestled between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, has long been a cherished secret of the Riviera Maya. The name Akumal, which means “Place of the Turtles” in the Mayan language, is a tribute to its most iconic residents—the sea turtles that return to its bay every year to feed and nest. Akumal offers a laid-back, serene alternative to its more bustling neighbors. Its atmosphere is a perfect blend of natural wonder and quiet charm, ideal for travelers who prioritize relaxation, ecotourism, and a deep connection with the marine environment.

The history of Akumal is as rich and fascinating as its natural beauty. The region was once a vital trading post for the ancient Mayans. Later, in the 16th century, it was the site of a Spanish shipwreck, with two of the survivors, Gonzalo Guerrero and Gerónimo de Aguilar, becoming pivotal figures in the history of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. However, the modern history of Akumal as a destination began in 1958 when Mexican businessman and diver Pablo Bush Romero founded it as a community for scuba divers. This legacy of marine exploration and conservation has remained a central part of Akumal’s identity ever since.

Akumal’s unique attractions are centered around its incredible natural features. The highlight for most visitors is snorkeling or swimming in Akumal Bay with the wild green sea turtles that graze on the seagrass beds. Due to conservation efforts, this experience is now highly regulated, and visitors must go with a certified guide to protect the turtles. Just north of the bay, the Yal-Kú Lagoon offers a different kind of aquatic adventure. This stunning inlet, where cool freshwater cenote water mixes with the Caribbean Sea, is a sanctuary for a vibrant array of tropical fish, perfect for a peaceful afternoon of snorkeling. Beyond the water, the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary and nearby jungle cenotes provide engaging inland excursions, from interacting with rescued animals to exploring sacred, cool caverns.

The region’s climate is tropical, with two distinct seasons. The dry season, running from November to April, is the most popular time to visit, featuring comfortable temperatures between 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) and little rainfall. The wet season, from May to October, brings higher temperatures, increased humidity, and more frequent, though often brief, showers. This period also coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, so it is important to stay updated on weather forecasts if traveling during these months.

To make the most of your trip, a few important concepts are worth knowing. First, Akumal’s focus on conservation means that visitors must use reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen or, in some areas, no sunscreen at all, to protect the delicate marine ecosystem. The town itself is small and walkable, with many travelers choosing to rent bikes for easy access to the bay, the lagoon, and nearby restaurants. While many larger establishments accept credit cards, it is always a good idea to have Mexican pesos on hand for smaller shops and local vendors. With its emphasis on nature, history, and a tranquil pace, Akumal offers a truly restorative experience for those looking to connect with the authentic heart of the Riviera Maya.

The distance from Akumal to our Pescado Adventures boats in the Puerto Aventuras marina is 11 miles (17.5 kilometers), approximately 20 minutes one way on the Federal Highway that runs between the two destinations.

What do I need to know when traveling to Tulum?

Tulum, a captivating coastal town on the southern Riviera Maya, has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a world-renowned destination. It’s a place where history, nature, and modern luxury converge in a truly unique way. Nestled against the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Tulum is defined by its stunning white-sand beaches, lush jungle surroundings, and the majestic ruins of an ancient Mayan city perched on a cliffside. This singular combination creates an atmosphere of spiritual tranquility and sophisticated style, attracting travelers who seek a more authentic and mindful experience than the typical all-inclusive resorts.

The town’s history is inextricably linked to the ancient Mayan civilization, and its archaeological site stands as its most iconic feature. Perched on a 12-meter cliff overlooking the sea, the ruins of Tulum were a walled city that served as a major port for the Mayans. These remarkably preserved structures offer a glimpse into a powerful past and provide a dramatic backdrop for a walk through history. Visitors can explore the temples, learn about the Mayan culture, and enjoy panoramic views of the Caribbean. The ruins are easily accessible, and a visit at sunrise or sunset offers an unforgettable experience, as the changing light casts a magical glow over the ancient stone.

Beyond the ruins, Tulum offers a wealth of unique attractions. The region is famous for its cenotes, which are natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. These stunning geological formations were sacred to the Mayans, who considered them gateways to the underworld. Today, they are popular for swimming, snorkeling, and diving in their cool, subterranean waters. The nearby Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another unmissable destination for nature lovers. This vast protected area is home to diverse ecosystems, including mangroves, lagoons, and a rich variety of flora and fauna, perfect for ecotours and kayaking adventures.

The weather in Tulum is characterized by a tropical climate with two main seasons. The dry season, from November to April, is the most popular time to visit, with temperatures averaging around 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C) and minimal rainfall. The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and more frequent, but often brief, rain showers. The temperature during this period can reach up to 90°F (32°C). It’s important to note that the hurricane season officially runs from June to November, and while direct hits are rare, it’s wise to monitor weather forecasts if traveling during these months.

For a memorable trip, there are a few important concepts to keep in mind. Tulum operates on a more relaxed, bohemian schedule, so plan for a slower pace. The town is divided into two main areas: the hotel zone (Tulum Playa), which lines the beach with boutique hotels and restaurants, and Tulum Pueblo, the main town with a more local vibe. It’s a highly sustainable destination, and many businesses operate off-grid, so be mindful of water and electricity usage. Finally, transportation is a key consideration. Many travelers choose to rent bikes to get between the town and the beach, while others opt for taxis. With a little preparation, a trip to Tulum promises a perfect escape that rejuvenates the mind, body, and soul.

The distance from Tulum to our Pescado Adventures boats in the Puerto Aventuras marina is 37 miles (42 kilometers), approximately 40 minutes one way on the Federal Highway that runs between the two destinations.
